Exam Instructions The following are instructions taken from the AP 2015-16 Exam Instructions book.
268 Students are expected to bring graphing calculators with statistical capabilities to the AP Statistics Exam. Non-graphical scientific calculators are permitted as long as they have the necessary computational capabilities. Before starting the test, make sure that each student has a graphing calculator from the approved list on page 47 of the 2015 AP Coordinator's Handbook - 16 or a scientific calculator. It is up to the student to determine whether a non-graphical scientific calculator has the necessary computational resources. If a student does not have a approved list graphing calculator or appropriate scientific calculator, you can provide one from your inventory. See pages 44-47 of the AP Coordinator Handbook for more information. If the student does not wish to use the calculator provided, or does not wish to use a calculator at all, the student must copy, date and sign the release statement on page 45 of the AP Coordinator Handbook. Students may not have more than two calculators on their desks. Calculators cannot be shared. It is not necessary to clear the calculator's memories before or after the test. Students with Hewlett-Packard 48–50 Series and Casio FX-9860 graphing calculators can use cards designed for use with these calculators. Supervisors should ensure that the infrared (Hewlett-Packard) ports are not facing each other. Because graphing calculators can be used to store data, including text, supervisors should monitor that students are using their calculators properly. Summary Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes Number of Questions 40 Percent of Total Score 50% Writing Instrument Pencil Electronic Device Required Graphing Calculator Expected Instructions Section I of this exam contains 40 multiple-choice questions. Only fill in the circles for numbers 1-40 on your answer sheet. Indicate all your answers to the multiple choice questions on the answer sheet. No credit will be given for anything written in this test booklet, but you may use the booklet for notes or sketches. Once you have decided which of the suggested answers is the best, completely fill in the corresponding circle on the answer sheet. Give only one answer to each question. If you change an answer, make sure the previous tag is completely deleted. Here is an example question and answer. Use your time effectively, working as quickly as possible without losing accuracy. Don't spend too much time on a single question. Please continue with other questions and come back to the ones you didn't answer if you have time. Not everyone should know the answers to all multiple choice questions. Your total score in the multiple choice section is based solely on the number of questions answered correctly. No points are deducted for wrong answers or unanswered questions. Form I Form Code 4MBP4-S 90

Citizens in each sample were asked if they were optimistic about the economy. For each sample, the polling agency created a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of all US citizens who were optimistic about the economy. Which of the following statements is the best interpretation of the 95% confidence level? (A) With 100 confidence intervals, we can be 95% sure that the sample proportion of US citizens who are optimistic about the economy is correct. (B) We expect that approximately 95 of the 100 confidence intervals contain the proportion of all US citizens who are optimistic about the economy. (C) We would expect about 5 of the 100 confidence intervals not to contain the sample proportion of US citizens optimistic about the economy. (D) Of the 100 confidence intervals, 95 of the intervals will be identical because they were constructed from samples of the same size of 1200. A representative of an automobile manufacturer in the United States made the following statement in a news report. Ten years ago, only 53% of Americans owned US-made cars, but that number is significantly higher today. A research group conducted a study to investigate whether the claim was true. The group found that 56% of a randomly selected sample of car owners in the United States owned cars made in the United States. A test of the appropriate hypotheses resulted in a p-value of 0.283. Assuming that the conditions for the inference were met, there is sufficient evidence to conclude, at a significance level of 0.05 to = , that the proportion of all automobile owners in the United States who own automobiles manufactured in the United States has increased since ten years ago? to go back? Each of the 60 babies watched a puppet show in which a red puppet tried to open the lid of a heavy box. A second puppet, called a helper, would try to help the red puppet open the box, while a third puppet, called a jammer, would try to close the lid of the box. After watching the show, each child was given a tray containing the helping puppet and the hindering puppet, and the researchers recorded which puppet the child reached. The researchers wanted to determine whether babies would reach more for the helping puppet than the hindering puppet. As part of the show, a green doll and a yellow doll served as helpers and hindrances. For each baby, a coin was flipped to determine which color would serve which role. Which of the following is the most important reason for randomly assigning colors to roles in the study? (A) If the cover is closed tightly, the top of the obstacle may be worn out after 60 functions. The random assignment of colors to the functions allows a more uniform wear between the helper and the hinderer. (B) The puppeteer can get tired of doing the same show with the same puppet colors. Randomly assigning colors to roles keeps the show fresh with each performance. (C) If the doll of the same color plays the same role, babies can show a color preference instead of a role preference. (D) Random assignment of colors to roles allows researchers to determine whether one color is better than another for teaching babies right and wrong. (E) Boys and girls may prefer different colors. The random assignment of colors to the roles ensures that the show is equally accessible to boys and girls.

What is the appropriate method for constructing a one-sample confidence interval for estimating population mean surface area of maple leaf species, and why is the method appropriate? (A) The interval t is appropriate because the population standard deviation is unknown. (B) The t interval is appropriate, because the t interval is narrower than the z interval.
