Cowboys rallied for the win 27-23 (2023)

byadministrator

Trailing by six points going into the fourth quarter, the Cowboys managed to rally in the final 15 minutes with 10 unanswered points. Leading up to that thrilling finale, however, the team was by far its own worst enemy, as turnovers, errors, and questionable play kept the lowly Texans in the game.

Dak Prescott, in particular, struggled in the first three quarters as he finished the day with 284 passing yards, but had a touchdown throw and two interceptions with at least a few other near misses. He finished with a rating of just 70.9, his lowest since he returned from injury.

Dallas fared better on the ground, averaging 4.1 yards per carry for a total of 127 rushing yards. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 62 yards on 15 carries and Tony Pollard added another 42 yards on 10 attempts.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys sometimes seemed underprepared for Houston quarterback Jeff Driskel, who was cut from the practice squad for this game. He completed just 4 of 6 passes for 38 yards, but also rushed for 36. The Cowboys couldn't sack him or Davis Mills and had only one hit as a runner. Together the duo finished with a 93.6 rating with wide receiver Chris Moore also totaling 10 receptions for 124 yards, both career highs.

The Cowboys wasted no time getting on the board by scoring on their first possession, just the third game this season in which they crossed the goal line on their first drive. The nine-play, 76-yard drive saw five carries and four pass attempts as Pollard earned the points after an 11-yard run from a straight tackle into the front pylon.

Despite the fast start, however, Dallas returned to its annoying habit of stumbling early and ended up trailing 10-7 late in the quarter.

The fights started with the one thing this team couldn't do against an inferior opponent: turn the ball over. Although the Cowboys defense forced a 3-and-out, returner KaVontae Turpin muffed the ensuing punt, and Houston recovered the prize at the Dallas 24-yard line.

Six plays later, running back Dameon Pierce got the tie, his fourth touchdown of the season.

And then, after the Cowboys' offense went three-and-three, Houston came back with a six-play drive that put the visitors within field goal range. The big hit came with a 36-yard pass thrown to the Dallas 27-yard line. McCarthy challenged the termination decision, but upon review, the decision was upheld.

The Cowboys held on from there, but Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn slipped his try well inside the left vertical bar for the go-ahead 43-yard field goal.

Dallas would not be behind for long. Prescott made things work well, and then on the drive, he threw wide receiver Noah Brown downfield for a 51-yard pass. Two plays later, Pollard shot wide to the right for 18 yards and two plays after that, the running back tackled Prescott and danced down the left sideline for the final 10 yards for another touchdown. This marked his second and fourth consecutive multiple touchdown games of the season, but his first career outing for runs and scores.

The Dallas defense prevented Pierce from reaching the Chains on fourth-and-3 from the Cowboys 42-yard line, but the resistance came at a cost. Cornerback Trevon Diggs and defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins left the game during the series with thumb and shoulder injuries, respectively. Fortunately for a Cowboys secondary already down two starting corners in Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis, Diggs was able to return.

But the turnover error came back to bite the Cowboys, Prescott throwing another interception late in the first half. A quick tilt to Brown was deflected by safety MJ Stewart, slipped through Brown's hands, and was eventually cornered by cornerback Tremon Smith, who ran 26 yards down the left sideline to the Dallas 27. Seven of Prescott's nine picks this season have gone like the second quarter.

Houston then needed just two plays to get to the goal line, when receiver Amari Rodgers passed two Cowboys defenders for his first career touchdown.

With 2:23 still on the clock, there was plenty of time for Prescott and company to add to their point total. Dallas was able to drive deep into enemy territory, but after failing to reach the end zone, Brett Maher was good on a 33-yard field goal.

Unfortunately, there was more bad news regarding injuries as right forward Terence Steele left the game with a left knee injury. Tight end Jake Ferguson is also listed as out with a neck injury.

Adding insult to injury, the Texans were able to rally in the final 40 seconds of the quarter and set up Fairbairn for a 50-yard field goal as time expired, giving Houston an unexpected 20-17 halftime lead. .

Diggs got off to an exciting start to the second half. After Donovan Wilson stripped the ball from Pierce, Diggs grabbed it on a rebound, ran nearly 20 yards back trying to find space, finally found a seam and returned it 17 yards to the Houston 28-yard line.

So, after running the ball 11 times compared to 23 pass attempts in the first half despite averaging 6.5 yards per rushing carry, the Cowboys came out and turned the ball over nine straight times on this opening drive of the second half. But on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line, Elliott was prepared for a 1-yard loss, Dallas left with nothing.

Starting at their own 2-yard line, the Texans were able to march 63 yards in 10 plays to get within field goal range. This time, Fairbairn split the 54-yard columns to extend the lead to six points, 23-17.

The Cowboys' comeback hopes began late in the third quarter when Dallas took control at their own 25-yard line and worked their way down midfield to the Texans' 33-yard line. But then the drive stalled, the team turned to Maher, who kicked the 53-yard field goal to bring it back within three.

But then disaster seemed to strike. When Turpin punted instead of throwing the fair catch, the Texans bounced the ball at the Dallas 1-yard line. But after getting a first down and going down again, Prescott's arm took a hit as he threw the second and 20 at his own 2-yard line. The pass intended for tight end Daulton Schultz went straight into the arms of cornerback Smith, Houston now with the ball at the Cowboys 4-yard line.

That's when Dallas' defense went big and kept the Texans out of the end zone. Driskel was stopped on the fourth goal from the 3-yard line, the Cowboys got the ball back with 3:20 remaining on the clock.

On the move they left. Prescott found Schultz for 21 yards, then again for 13. The quarterback would convert a 3rd-and-1 at the Texans 46-yard line and then saw Brown make a beautiful catch near the right sideline for an 18-yard gain. .

When Prescott then hit Schultz on the seam for 18 yards, the Cowboys had first and goal at the Texans 4-yard line with 55 seconds remaining. It took three downs, but Elliott received the transfer and charged right down the middle for the game-winning 11-play, 98-yard touchdown drive.

The Texans certainly weren't going down without a fight and they made it interesting in the end. When Mills found Moore up the middle for 31 yards to the Dallas 44-yard line, Cowboy Nation was more than a little anxious.

But Houston left tackle Laremy Tunsil was called for false start penalties on consecutive plays, leaving Mills attempting a final Hail Mary in the end zone. There, Cowboys safety Israel Mukuamu outran a swarm of Dallas defenders to intercept and seal the win.

With the win, the Cowboys ended their three-game home stay and kept pace with the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles.
