Taking a poorly written practice test can cause you to study the wrong things and give you an inaccurate idea of what the actual AP exam will be like. In this guide, I will cover all of the AP Stats practice tests available,Explain if and how you should use each, and end with a timeline you can follow to help you incorporate practice tests into your study plans. Official mock exams are those created by the College Board (the organization that develops and administers all real AP exams).They are always the main resources to use.because you can be sure they accurately reflect the format and content of the actual AP exam. There are three types of official practice resources: The College Board has published two comprehensive examswhich are linked below. Launch of the 2012 AP Statistics Exam 1997 AP Statistics Published Exam Both links include the full test, an answer key, and scoring information. Both are very useful study resources, including the 1997 test, since the AP Stats test hasn't changed much since then. The current exam lasts three hours in two sections. Students may use a graphing calculator throughout the exam. Multiple Choice Section: Free response section: The only major difference between the current format and the 1997 exam format is thatthe 1997 exam had 35 multiple-choice questions instead of 40.The content of the exam tests has remained consistent, so despite its age, this test is still a great resource to use and will give you a good idea of what your AP exam will look like. The 2012 exam has the same format as the current exam. The College Board frequently reuses multiple-choice questions, so there aren't many officially published multiple-choice questions available for AP Stats.

Other than the multiple-choice questions on the published exam, the only official multiple-choice questions you can use in your studies are on theAP Statistics Course Description.Starting on page 240, there are 16 multiple-choice questions (plus 2 free-response questions), along with an answer key.
Free response questions
Compared to multiple choice,there are many more official free answer questions that you can use to studyand since they are recent they will give you a very precise idea of what to expect from the real exam.
The University Council publishedfree response questions from 1998-2019, alsolike 2021which means you have dozens of official free-response questions to use in your studies. All free response questions include answer keys and sample answers.
Unofficial AP Statistics Quizzes and Practice Tests
Although not created by the College Board, many unofficial AP Statistics practice tests are still of high quality and can be a great study resource. For each feature listed below, I explain what it includes and how you should use it.
Shmoop
Shmoop is the only feature on this list that requires you to pay to access any of its features.Paying your monthly fee of around $25 gives you access to a diagnostic exam, four full practice tests, and bonus practice questions. With a paid subscription, you also get access to Shmoop's resources for the SAT, ACT, and other AP exams.
statistical walk
This is a full 40 question multiple choice test. You can take the test timed or untimed, and you can choose to see the answer to each question immediately after you answer it, or wait until the end of the test to see which answers were correct. Some of these questions are a bit easier than those found on the actual AP exam, but it's still a solid resource.
Alberto
Albert organizes his practice questions into the four big ideas of AP statistics, and the big ideas are divided into more specific topics, each withRelevant short quizzes that can be useful if you are studying and want to easily find questions on certain topics.Questions are graded as easy, moderate, or difficult, are not timed, and you will see the correct answer (plus a detailed explanation) after answering each question.
You'll need to sign up for a free account, which includes a limited amount of credits you can use to answer questions. If you wish to access more questions beyond your initial allowance, you will need to pay the full access fee of $79.
University teachers
Varsity Tutors features include four diagnostic tests and 139 practice quizzes organized by topic. Each of the four diagnostic tests contains 40 multiple-choice questions and,like the Stat Trek exam, they are similar to but slightly easier than the actual AP exam. It's timed while you take the exams, and as a bonus, once you've completed the exam, the questions are organized into different categories so you can see which categories you did best in and which categories you should focus your study on.
For this site, I recommend using primarily the diagnostic tests, as most of the individual quizzes are so short (only 1-3 questions) that it can be frustrating to continually start and end separate quizzes.
Kansas State UniversityProofmiKeyword
This is a 25 question multiple choice quiz from the Kansas State University Mathematics Department.The questions are of good quality, although you will have to evaluate the quiz yourself.(the correct letter is in bold in the answer key). This is another good option if you want to answer a few practice questions but don't want to take a full exam.
Dan Shuster
This site has 24 quizzes (12 multiple choice and 12 free response). They were created by an AP Statistics professor and follow his syllabus. Each multiple choice test has 10 questions and short answer explanations are given after each test is completed. Each free response quiz has three questions, as well as explanations of the answers. The free-response questions are especially shorter and easier than what you'll find on the actual AP exam, butyou can still use this feature if you want to do a quick and specific study.
How to Use These AP Statistics Practice Tests
Knowing how to use each of these features will make your study more effective, as well as prepare you for what the actual AP Statistics exam will look like. Read the guide below to find out how and when you should use these practice tests and quizzes.
First semester
Right now, you're still learning a lot of important information, so during the first semester of AP Stats, you should focus on quizzes and free-response questions on topics you've already covered. Start using these materials halfway through the semester.
multiple choice practice
For multiple choice practice,Take unofficial tests that allow you to choose the subjects in which you want to be evaluated.This allows you to review content you've already learned and avoid questions about material you haven't covered yet. The best resources for this are Albert, Varsity Tutors, and Dan Shuster because their quizzes are clearly organized by specific topic.
free response practice
For free response questions, please use the official free response questions posted in the Official Practice Tests section. There are many questions available, so check them out to find questions you can answer based on what you've already learned. It is best to answer a group of them (up to six) together at one time for the most realistic preparation for the actual AP exam.
It is also helpful to take the time to answer these questions, especially as the end of the semester approaches.Try to spend about 12 minutes each on the first five questions and 30 minutes on the research task.(which will be the last question in the section).

Second half
The second semester is when you can start taking full practice tests and continue reviewing the content you have already learned. Follow these five steps:
Step 1 – Complete your first comprehensive practice exam
About a month or two into this semester, after you've covered most of the content you need to know for the AP exam, take your first full practice exam.For this first practice test, I recommend using the official 1997 practice test.. You need to do this test timed and all at once, and then correct it when you're done.
If you haven't already, now is a good time toset a target score for yourself.Try to get at least 3, as this is the lowest score to pass the exam. However, if you scored a 3 or higher on this first practice test, it's a good idea to set your target score even higher, to a 4 or 5. Getting a higher score on the AP Stats exam seems more impressive to people. colleges and sometimes you can earn more college credit.
Step 2: Review your score results
After calculating your score, go through each problem you answered incorrectly and try to figure out why you got the question wrong. As you do this, look for patterns in your results. Are you finding that you have too many experimental design questions wrong? Did you do well with the multiple choice but did you have problems with the free response?
Finding out what problems you got wrong and why is the best way to stop repeating your mistakes and make improvements for future exams.Although it may seem tedious, don't be tempted to skip this step!
Step 3: Focus on your weak areas
By now, you should have a good idea of what areas or techniques you need to work on to increase your score. If there are specific content areas you need to work on, review them by reviewing your notes, reading a review book, and answering multiple-choice and free-response questions that specifically focus on those topics.
If you are having difficulty with your test-taking techniques, for example, running out of time on the test or asking the wrong questions, the best way to combat these problems is to answer lots of practice questions under realistic test conditions.
Step 4: Take another practice test
After you've spent some time improving your weak areas, it's time to see the results of your hard work. Take and schedule another practice exam completed, timed, and completed in one sitting. This is a good time to use the official exam released in 2012 or the University of Delaware multiple-choice section + the official set of free-response questions.
Step 5: Review your results to determine your future study plan
Now you can see how much you've improved, and in what areas, since you took your first full practice test. If you've made improvements and have reached or are close to your target score, you just need to study a little between now and the AP exam.
However, if you haven't improved much or are still far from your target score, you'll need to look at how you've been analyzing and think of ways to improve.The most common reason for not improving is not actively studying,and just passively flip through your notes or review missed questions.
Active study requires more time and effort, but it is the best way to see significant improvements. As you study, make sure you understand exactly where you made a mistake on each practice question you answered incorrectly. Also, when reviewing your notes, stop every few minutes and mentally review what you just learned to make sure you're retaining the information.
You can repeat these steps as many times as necessary to make improvements and reach your target score.. If you need more extensive practice tests, you can create your own by combining a set of official free-response questions with 40 unofficial multiple-choice questions. Stat Trek and Varsity Tutors are probably the best resources for multiple choice questions, since each of their tests already has 40 questions for you.
Conclusion: Where to Find AP Statistics Practice Tests
If you want to score well on the AP Statistics exam, you will almost certainly have to take a few practice tests. The official resources are the best to use, but there are also many high-quality unofficial quizzes and tests that you should use.
